Although not born in Banbury, James moved to the town from Liverpool to work at the Whately Hotel, where he met his future wife, Hilda. They married, set up home in Banbury, and in September 1941 had a daughter named Angela, whom James tragically never saw. On 14th December of that year, the HMS Galatea on which he served was torpedoed off Alexandria by German U-Boat U-557, sinking the ship with the loss of 470 crew. James is named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
